The conservatives who opposed Pebb's Progenitor's attempts at expanding Citizenship and more check and balance on the power of the Senate. The Optimates without exception are generational patriarchs some of which can trace their lineages to the founding of the Republic.
The Optimates are a powerful faction and dominates the Senate. They are only ever checked when the other factions unite against them.
The Optimates wishes to maintain the ideals of the Republic, to keep rigid its social classes and to ensure stability by empowering the Nobles. Only through the Nobles will the Republic prosper and a prospering Republic means betterment for all - even the vulgar plebs.
